.Helpful resources.General rules. Follow. Keep it civil and on topic. So many of us have had the Error code: 0xC004C003 - The activation server determined the specified product key is blocked. This essentially means the activation server looked at your product key (generic) and hardware ID and didn't think you owned windows 10.This occurs mostly when a clean install is done. As you know microsoft have an 'online chat' feature where you can query any issues. At present there are queues of several hours and there is also no feedback on your experience so don't waste your time.Microsofts guide on fixing this issue.1 - Wait a few days - It'll probably activate itself eventuallyJunil N:If you see that Windows is not activated before afterthe upgrade, don’t worry.
We are seeing some delay in activation. Hey, do you know what to do if the original partitions are deleted? I completely wiped my hard drive after my initial upgrade didn't delete all my folders without knowing I'd have this issue. Since my windows 8 was EUFI I figured the windows 10 installation would recognize my cdkey on the mobo ( i dont know if it actually does things this way or not) and clean installed. So far I've had no luck, but if it's tied to hardware can you install windows 8 on a virtual machine which technically has the same hardware, and do the 'upgrade' that way and tie it to your current machine?
I downloaded the windows 10 insider preview. I ended up having to reset my PC and i started getting an 'activate windows 10' watermark. Of course i ignored it and continued on, now with the full release of windows 10 i tried to update, turns out, i need to activate this version of windows first, but all of the keys that i have to use are useless since they have been put out of commission.

I really don't want to reinstall everything for a 3rd or 4th time.
Hi,If Windows 10 was activated before a clean install, it should be activated automatically - If it is reinstalled without activated yet, you will have to again upgrading from an activated Windows 7 system. However I also saw issues like Magical Mayhem 007 said that if it was activated before but still failed to activate as it should, you can contact Microsoft for help. Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and un-mark them if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact tnmff@microsoft.com. Yea I have this same issue and it's been way longer that 48 hours even now, going on 4 days since first upgrade attempt. The issue is they gave out the same key to hundreds (maybe thousands) of people. This should not have happened but apparentlyhas. I have already tried to reinstall 8.1 Pro twice and re-upgrade but the 'per machine' copy of windows is apparently locked to my account since I log in and the same key is there over and over again.
3 times I have upgraded. I did not downloadthe upgrade tool and make an ISO as some have done. I know received a notification in Windows update while I was running it (and installed a few 8.1 updates I had missed apparently) and it came back saying it was available, so I set the upgrade in motion.I am not sure what to do now. The easiest thing to do would be for MS to get off their butts and email the keys out to people, but we all know they won't.
I DO NOT want to re-install 8.1 Pro again when all I need is a proper working key to change. I hopethey fix this issue soon because not only is the watermark in the corner REALLY annoying but I can't do a lot of personalization without activation. Don't get me wrong.
10 is the best version to date but the roll out was flubbed big time by MS and theyshow no signs of caring or even issued a statement as to how or why this happened or how they plan on fixing it.TJ. So you are telling me they screwed up even worse, than just messing up a key distribution? That really fills me with confidence in the ongoing support of this OS. I can't speak for others with this issue (and I have seen people say they did a clean install)but I did what I was supposed to do and they somehow still screwed me. I didn't do a fresh /custom install, I did an upgrade. I am honestly glad this was not something I had to pay for or I would be even more angry than I am. This is notthe way they should have done this to begin with, they should have emailed out the keys to all users who 'reserved a copy' (they knew months in advance) and now people like me are stuck with an non-activated copy of Windows 10 or the fun choreof rolling back (and losing programs and apps) or a full reinstall.
Whatsapp without adding contact iphone. I think honestly if they would just come out and say hey we are sorry we screwed up and we are working on it, I would be ok with it but when I hear nothing but you have to wait 24-48 hours( going on 5 days now) and it will fix itself or it's your fault for doing this/that. It does not leave me feeling good about the level of customer care they have when this is obviously their fault (in my case only, not speaking for other people as I saidabove).
I have had no change in hardware for at least 8 months and I went through Windows update and did a upgrade not a custom install. I didn't download the tool to make an ISO or a USB flash drive image. I did an upgrade, I just want to know if they are workingon this issue and if they ever are going to fix it.AND how many more times they expect me to re-install 8.1 and then upgrade again before it works.TJ.
So I decided it's best if I just rollback to 8.1 Pro for now and until they straighten all this out (hopefully won't be too long). The inability to personalize Windows because I can't activate is annoying me a little too much. I just hope they willcome out and say that it is now safe to upgrade because I don't want to be stuck in this never ending loop of upgrading and rolling back. I am thankful though that I was able to rollback.
I wasn't able to do that the first time due to the system deleting thefiles needed (still not sure how that happened when it clearly states you have 1 month to rollback) the second time I didn't even bother trying because I have a 8.1 Pro install flash drive, I made a while back. I really hope this issue gets fixed soonthough because I do like Windows 10 better.TJ. Many people have Windows 7 or 8.1 installed, checked that is activated two different ways and then used Windows update and the get error code0xC004C003, which states that user has an illegal copy.
What should we do?The MVP responses to this simple question is once again attack the users:1)If you clean installed before updating you will have to roll back to the previous OS (If possible), re-install the old OS, or purchase a win 10 key2) keep rolling back and forth until it works??I mean no offence but what is wrong with you people? Do you even know bother to read English that is written? Maybe English is second language and if so I apologize. Please try to read the questions without giving genericanswer from Microsoft. If you don't have a good reply, then don't answer!1) We didn't clean install. Learn to read English.
It is a free upgrade since we met eligibility, why should we pay???? Why don't you pay and give us the key. 2) How many times? We have nothing better to do than waste our precious time?3) Why doesn't MS help message state that there is a problem on company side???As a long time MSFT shareholder and practicing engineer I am just appalled at the responses on the boards by so called professionals. No wonder most people hate engineers. How about a straight answer? The only key involved in the whole update process is the key used when windows 7 or 8.1 was installed. As long as you have logged into your MS account during the times using the OS then it would have been recorded to your account.
When you update to Windows 10 and during that process you will be asked to enter your MS account login which will in turn giveyou a generic key which basically means nothing as the GUID of your motherboard will be stored in your MS account, that is the new key system.Yea I know, there are flaws, but thats MS way of doing it.When in windows 10, and your account was verified, you then can clean install as much as you like and when asked to enter a key, just keep skipping it and when you login with your MS account, you will automatically be activated. It will activate as longas your motherboards GUID matches with your MS Account, retail key versions will not need a GUID match but will be stored in case it is installed on another machine then it will not activate as you can only have it installed on one machine at one time. The tech support is reading off a frelling script and not very helpful at all.
I have reinstalled or rolled back 4 times in total, so ran Upgrade 5 timesin total and it's the same thing every time. This was not the right way to roll this out.
Every user who reserved their copy should have been emailed the key. IF they did this now, it wouldn't be too late to fix this issue. I have heard that it uses yourWindows Installation ID which I am sorry to say is different EVERY TIME you reinstall, which I am sure (if that is the way it is being done) is why part of this issue is happening. I have had to re-reserve my copy twice (not counting the first time I did it)This generic key they gave everyone is the issue, for some reason it is now locked to the user accounts and since it is being viewed as being used by too many users and causing even more issues.

Please MS just mail out keys, this would take a lot of frustrationout of our hands since that is really all that's needed. I have rolled back to 8.1 Pro again and hoping that they finally do something about this issue and not just keep blowing smoke up our butts anymore. It's been 7 days since this problem began and therehasn't been anything said by MS about it. I feel cheated and disappointed at the same time. Windows 10 is a great OS and to have it marred right from the start by a poorly planned rollout and horrible customer support is leaves a bad taste in my mouth.TJ.
I had the same problem after my upgrade+clean install yesterday. I read somewhere that doing a reset might help, tried it and it worked!
My win10 is finally activated.you do it like this: Settings - Recovery - Reset this PCI wish this were the case for me but that was the first thing I tried before doing a reinstall of 8.1 and it did nothing (the first time anyway). For better or worse this 'generic' key they gave everyone is latched onto my MS account and won't letgo, no matter how many times I refresh, reset, rollback or reinstall.
Once I try the upgrade again, the key is still there lol. Glad it worked for you though:)TJ.
