Where To Lubricate A Walther P22
Nov 3, 2012 - I've cut and pasted it here 'cause it's the best damn gun lube guide I've ever read. Walther P22 is famous for hating cheap ammo.
I have a Walther P22 that I bought a few years ago.I have tried different ammo, different mags (silver and black), different lube, etc.Seems like I'll get lots of failure to feed AND failure to fire. Failure to Fire's a less common, but a few times per session, the firing pin will strike but gun won't go boom.Mostly though, the round will not feed into the chamber after cycling. I'll have to either pull the slide back and let it reseat, or pull the mag out, clear the jam and go again.Anything I can try before having to send to Walther? My P22 not only feeds most ammos, but also loves, LOVES, to feed dirty. In fact, it now only seems to feed reliably when it is dirty.I achieved this by polishing the snot out of the firing pin block, and rounding off the trigger-bar ears to remove the sharp edges that tear up the under side of the slide. These and many more improvements can be found in the P22 BibleThe key to feeding the P22 is to reduce the internal drag that the design has inherently. Polishing is an easy way to do this, but getting rid of the sharp edges on the triiger bar is essential to any extended life. Opening up the lower edge of the chamber will also help, though I myself have not done that bit.
I have one, and I know two close friends who also have them. We all have the same problem. It doesn't feed most rounds reliably even with the new magazines, and sometimes doesn't go boom. I have both the 3' and 5' barrels, and so does my other friend. The barrel length has no effect on reliability. The solution to the problems is to use CCI Mini Mags. Not Stingers, or anything else in their line up.
I have fired thousands of them and never, and I mean never, had a FTF with those things. I know the other guys have the same luck with them, and I have read the same from forums in the past. I don't know why they love them, but they do.I have fired everything under the sun through mine, and I do love the little pistol, but if I want reliability I know the Mini Mags will produce it. A lot of the old P-22's had manufacturing defects. I happened to get one of them that had a burr in the frame that chopped up my slide and made it unreliable.
I called them and they sent me a shipping kit, so I sent back the gun and they fixed it. No problems now. Fallout 4 1.10.114 patch download.
Just shot it again yesterday. If you're the original owner, most gun companies will fix the problems with their firearms at no charge, sometimes even if they're out of warranty. If you're not the original owner, they will charge you whatever gunsmithing fees are involved for fixing it.I've had guns fixed by S&W, Ruger, and Walther. And the most I spent on any of them was buying a shipping box for P-22. I think it cost me $3.I suggest simply calling them and see what they say.WT. The link provided by FieroCDSP called the 'P22 Bible' is some of the best photo work I've ever seen online as well as being a good thorough step-by-step run through of the various things that can be done easily to help your pistol. It sounds like you may have a little too much resistance to the slide closure - if the bolt to hammer contact is rough at the surface of the bolt, or if there's a little too much meat on the bottom of the bolt the hammer can slow the slide enough to cause the feed issue you describe. If you file a little off of the bottom rear of the bolt, maybe.020' at the most, it'll let the bolt/slide run more easily over the hammer.A little bit of polish to the feed ramp just where your cartridge rides over the bottom rear of the chamber can help too. While in there look for anything that is contacting the bolt enough to slow the gun or wear parts unevenly. You can reshape the hammer tip to be rounder so it'll clear the safety bar and that'll help to smooth the bottom of bolt to hammer contact mentioned before.
Just a little goes a long way if you have a glitchy gun.Very simple and easy to do small fixes make for good running little pistols. The little guys are mass produced without hand fitting so they can stay the neat CHEAP little shooters they are. You need to fill in the gaps for Walther.Oh, and Wolff's +5 spring is the icing on the cake.
I followed a few steps from the P22 Bible about a year ago and by far, the most difference was made by polishing the trigger bar ears so they would no longer cut into the slide. Probably put 5-10k rounds through it since and with the exception of AE ammo, had no failures to feed or extract. Plus, now it feeds and cycles standard velocity ammo as well.Polished ramp, trigger bar ears, bottom side of bolt.Good luck and if you can, keep the P22 bible close by for reference when you work on it.

For the bolt I used 1000 paper on a glass surface, flat. Ramp works best with cone-shaped Dremmel felt tip (hard) and some rouge.
Walther P22 Problems
For final, mirror like polish, I use Mother's Mag polish. Not rough enough to cause any damage, yet shines and smooths the metal like nothing else.

In rereading my post above I can see that my having said 'If you file a little off of the bottom rear of the bolt, maybe.020' at the most' could bring someone a problem if they also take material from the hammer. It might be possible to take so much off either the hammer, the slide, or both that the gun may not cock and the hammer might follow the slide down, possibly causing the gun to double or run away till it's empty. I think it's very unlikely but want to pass along the caution. You can't put it back in most cases and sometimes it's not easy to know when enough is enough already and stop.
